AGRIPROJECTS COURSE OVERVIEW

Agriprojects: A Unique Equine Educational Experience

Agriprojects is a comprehensive agriculture-based class offered through Oxford Virtual Academy. It is taught using horses as an engaging medium. This course is designed for elementary through high school students and is hosted at Shenanigans Farm.

Course Topics:

  • Equine Basics: Explore horse and herd behavior, physical attributes, health, nutrition, and living environment (barn and pasture management).

  • Equine Professionals: Learn from experienced trainers, veterinarians, and farriers about equine sports, sciences, and veterinary studies.

  • Equine Arts and Culture: Discover the horse's role in art, history, literature, and culture.

  • Riding and Horsemanship: Engage in various forms of riding, horsemanship skills, and hands-on learning experiences.

Course Structure:

  • Balanced Approach: Spend half of each class exploring equine topics on the ground (farm, classroom) and half riding.

  • Focus on Agriculture: This course is not designed to teach riding but to provide a comprehensive educational experience through horses.

  • 3-Year Program: Students can spend up to six semesters (or three years) with us. One semester in Ag100, one semester in Ag200, two semesters in Ag300, and two semesters in Ag400.

Eligibility:

  • Oxford Virtual Academy Enrollment: Students should be enrolled in Oxford Virtual Academy either part-time or full-time (elementary, middle, or high school).

  • Age Requirement: Students must be at least six years old.

  • Starting Course: We recommend starting with Ag100 if a student does not have previous riding experience.

Course Fees: A $100-course fee applies to part-time OVA students, and a $400-course fee applies to self-pay (non-OVA) students.

AGRIPROJECTS 100

This course is for new or younger students curious about agriculture and animals, with a focus on horses. It is an “on-the-ground” class and does not include riding. Students can take Ag100 for one semester.

In Agriprojects 100, students will learn:

  • Horse and Barn Safety

  • Grooming a Horse

  • Parts of the Horse

  • Equine Health & Nutrition

  • Horse Behavior

  • Parts of Tack & How to Tack

  • Types & Breeds of Horses

  • Styles of Riding & Disciplines

  • Equine Sports & Careers

Students will learn these concepts through teaching, practice, guest equine experts, and various hands-on activities (we will not be riding). No helmet will be needed for this class, and students must wear closed-toe shoes or boots.

This course will last ten weeks (in-person), and students must complete 14 weeks of online learning through OVA.

SPRING 2025 REGISTRATION


AGRIPROJECTS 200

For students who have completed Agriprojects 100, Agriprojects 200 reviews the fundamentals learned in Agriprojects 100 and adds riding.  Students begin learning to care for and ride a horse on the walk.  Students can take Ag200 for one semester.

In Agriprojects 200, students will review and learn:

  • Horse and Barn Safety

  • Grooming a Horse

  • Parts of the Horse

  • Horse Behavior

  • Parts of Tack & How to Tack

  • Mounting & Dismounting

  • Steering & Halting

  • Riding at the Walk

Students will review these concepts through teaching, practice, guest equine experts, and various hands-on activities.  Students begin riding at the walk.  Students must have an ASTM Certified riding helmet (which can be fitted and purchased at a tack store).  Students need to wear pants and boots.

SPRING 2025 REGISTRATION


AGRIPROJECTS 300

For students who have completed Agriprojects 100 and 200, Agriprojects 300 reviews the riding fundamentals learned in previous courses and adds the element of riding independently at the walk and trot. Students can take Ag300 for two semesters.

In Agriprojects 300, students will review and learn:

  • Horse and Barn Safety

  • Grooming a Horse

  • Tacking a Horse

  • Riding at the Walk and begin Trotting

Students will review these concepts through teaching, practice, guest equine experts, and various hands-on activities. They will ride at the walk and begin trotting. Students must have an ASTM Certified riding helmet (which can be fitted and purchased at a tack store) and wear pants and boots.

SPRING 2025 REGISTRATION


AGRIPROJECTS 400

For students who have completed Agriprojects 100, 200, and 300, Agriprojects 400 reviews the riding fundamentals learned in previous courses and adds the element of riding independently at the walk and trot. Students can take Ag400 for two semesters.
